Update: Community Based Fisheries

The 2026 fishing season has continued to advance Community Based Fisheries (CBF), with two Shareholder Nations participating in three fisheries:

  • The Haida Nation plans to launch a Salmon Gillnet CBF for the first time this season, as well as a Groundfish CBF currently underway for its second consecutive year, and a Salmon Troll CBF for its third consecutive year.

  • The Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation is running a Groundfish CBF for its second consecutive year.

  • Both the Haida Nation and the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation had planned Prawn CBFs for their second year, but both Nations decided to pause their Prawn projects for 2026 due to unforeseen circumstances.


CBF Progress

  • The Groundfish CBFs are continuing to develop and test innovative monitoring solutions to achieve management objectives, while still being feasible for small-scale fishers. Improvements and innovations to this unique system are ongoing as we move towards a monitoring approach that can adapt to the needs of a diverse range of fishing activity.

  • The team at Coastal Nations Fisheries have been supporting CBF implementation including fishery business development and management reforms that ensure conservation objectives are met, improve the socio-economic viability for fishers, and increase the opportunity for Nations and their members to participate in, and benefit from, fishing.
