What are Community Based Fisheries?

A range of new economic opportunities are becoming available for existing or aspiring fishers in CNF shareholder Nations: Gitga’at, Gitxaała, Haida, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo Xai’xais, Metlakatla, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv.

One of many economic opportunities available through the Fisheries Resources Reconciliation Agreement (FRRA), Community Based Fisheries (CBFs) are distinct, small-boat, communal and commercial fisheries in CNF shareholder Nations.

CBFs provide opportunities for small-business fishers and families, including financial aid to update or acquire vessels and gear to improve fishing opportunities. They could also be a steppingstone for shareholder Nations’ fishers who wish to gradually work their way into the larger coastwide commercial fishing industry.

This is an exciting opportunity for the Nations and their citizens and will take time to be fully implemented. To acquire the right fishing resources, Nations are engaging with citizens to determine what species they are interested in fishing and how they plan to fish. This information will guide the process and create a fleet of viable and sustainable small-boat fishing enterprises within each community.
